New Axis Health Center Doubles Service Capacity

The Independent – May 2016
Axis Community Health celebrated the opening of its new health center at 5925 W. Las Positas Blvd. in Pleasanton last Saturday
[May 21].

The new 24,000 sq. ft. health center doubles Axis’s service capacity for primary health care and mental health. Construction involved a complete interior renovation of the existing structure in order to create 27 exam rooms, 7 counseling rooms, and ancillary
service areas.

Axis presently has two additional medical clinic sites, one in downtown Pleasanton and one at Livermore’s multi-services center, as well as two behavioral health sites and a Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition program site. All current sites will
remain open.

In the last year, Tri-Valley residents made more than 100,000 visits to one of Axis’s five locations.

The project was completed by INDE Architecture and general contractor Oliver & Co.

Some funding for the $12 million project came from Alameda County, the cities of Dublin, Livermore and Pleasanton, and HUD. Most of the remainder is being financed through The California Endowment and Capital Impact Partners. Axis also raised $1.7 million for construction through a capital campaign and is now raising an additional $300,000 for medical equipment and furnishings. Major campaign supporters include Kaiser Permanente, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare, Fremont Bank Foundation, and HEDCO Foundation.

Founded in 1972, Axis provides quality, affordable medical, mental health, and substance abuse services.

More than one hundred people joined Axis Community Health to celebrate the start of construction on its new health center.  Board Chair James Paxson and CEO Sue Compton wielded the hammers to break through a wall and get renovation started.  Opening in mid-2015, the facility will provide medical and mental health services for thousands of Tri-Valley residents.  Pictured above (from left):  Charlotte Salomon, Axis Campaign Chair; Alameda County Supervisor  Nate Miley; Valerie Jonas, Axis CDO; Marianne Balin, Kaiser Permanente Community Benefits; James Paxson, Axis Board Chair; Sue Compton, Axis CEO; Congressman Eric Swalwell; Dee Brook; Livermore Mayor John Marchand; Josh Thurman of Supervisor Scott Haggerty’s Office.

Funding Grows for New Clinic

Axis is one step closer to opening its new clinic, thanks to a generous contribution from the Fremont Bank Foundation. The $50,000 grant will support construction of the clinic. Read more here about the Fremont Bank contribution.

Axis Future Community Health Center
Serving the Tri-Valley

Axis is at Full Capacity

We serve 14,000 Tri-Valley residents, and expect to serve 20,000 by 2016.

Axis’s two medical clinics, one in Livermore and one in Pleasanton, are operating at full capacity. We’ve hired more medical providers, added Saturday and evening hours, and optimized the number of patients seen per hour. The only option for expanding our service capacity to meet the growing need is adding more exam and counseling rooms- which requires more space.

Vision for the Future – A New Health Center

Opening in 2016, providing affordable, quality medical and mental health care for thousands of Tri-Valley residents.

To meet the growing need for health care safety-net services for low-income families, Axis has purchased a 24,000 sq. ft. building at 5925 W. Las Positas Blvd. in Pleasanton. We have designed an outstanding facility that includes 27 exam rooms, 7 mental health counseling rooms, patient education facilities, a pharmacy, and other services. The new location has ample parking and is readily accessible by public transportation. The health center will be a “medical home” that fully integrates medical and mental health care, a cutting-edge service model that has proven effective at generating better outcomes for patients. When open in 2016, the center will double our capacity- Axis will be able to provide 60,000 medical visit per year.

The $1.7 Million Campaign for the New Health Center

Our goal is to raise $1.7M to complete the funding of the center. We invite you to join us in this endeavor to provide access to quality, affordable health care for our community.

The renovation is estimated to cost $11-12 million. The majority of the cost will be financed, which means Axis will carry significant debt service. Other funds will come from Alameda County, from local Tri-Valley cities, and from our community.
