Open enrollment for Covered California health insurance coverage is open now to anyone and goes until January 31, 2024. Axis Community Health offers free enrollment assistance to help consumers with the process, including determining eligibility for financial support.
Assistance at Axis is free and available in English and Spanish during business hours via phone, Monday through Friday. Other languages are also supported. To make an appointment with an enrollment counselor, call Axis at (925) 462-1755.
“Health insurance is confusing. We will answer your questions,” says Diego Alonzo, Community Engagement Manager for Axis. “Our enrollment counselors can help determine your eligibility for Covered California, Medi-Cal, or CalFresh during a free enrollment assistance appointment.”
Covered CA offers plans from private insurance companies are available for U.S. citizens and for documented immigrants. Applicants cannot be denied coverage due to preexisting conditions. Many applicants are eligible to receive financial assistance to help cover the cost of plans and services. Individuals with an income of $58,320 or less qualify; a family of four, with an income of $120,000 or less qualifies. In 2024, those who do not qualify for financial assistance may still be eligible to receive a federal tax credit to help lower their premiums.
For coverage starting January 1, enroll by December 31. For coverage starting February 1, enroll by January 31. Plans purchased during the current open enrollment period will be honored through the end of 2024.
“It’s important that consumers not miss the open enrollment window for Covered CA or they may not have another opportunity to enroll,” says Alonzo. “Remember, you must now have coverage or potentially face a state tax penalty.”
Axis counselors also assist people with Medi-Cal and Medi-Cal renewals. To qualify for Medi-Cal, an individual must meet income and other eligibility requirements. For individuals, an income of $20,121 or less qualifies; for a family of four an income of $41,400 or less qualifies. New in 2024, Alameda County residents 26-49 years of age may qualify for full-scope Medi-Cal. Immigration status does not matter.
