This month serves as a reminder of the invaluable healthcare support system that Medi-Cal provides to those in need, while also shedding light on the importance of healthcare accessibility and equity. Did you know that 69% of Axis patients are Medi-Cal beneficiaries? Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, plays a crucial role in ensuring that individuals and families who are experiencing income hardships have access to essential healthcare services. As of January 1, 2024, Medi-Cal now covers adults ages 26-49 regardless of immigration status. The 2024 expansion gave over 700,000 additional California residents the ability to access low to no-cost health insurance1.…
April 11-17th is Black Maternal Health week, a time to acknowledge that significant disparities still exist in maternal health outcomes. In California and across the United States, Black mothers experience some of the highest rates of life-threatening childbirth complications, deaths from pregnancy-related causes, and babies born too early or too small. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women1. This statistic is not just a reflection of individual health choices or behaviors, but proof of inequities deeply ingrained in our healthcare…
This month, the Axis clinic teams have been engaged in a friendly competition to see who could order the highest percentage of colorectal cancer screenings for patients who are overdue for testing. Between March 1 to March 23, the collective efforts yielded remarkable results- 234 out of 273 patients who had appointments and who were overdue for colorectal cancer screenings received orders for screenings. That is an impressive 85.7%! Additionally Axis has seen an 11% increase in colorectal cancer screening rates between 2022-2023. These scores are a testament to the effectiveness of the competition in action to improve patient outcomes.…
The journey from groundbreaking to where we stand today has been filled with much anticipation, and we are pleased to report that the renovations are still proceeding according to plan. The second floor of the building is truly taking shape! Second street has successfully passed wall inspections and completed the drywall and insulation installations. Additionally, the second-floor ceiling is currently being closed, marking another significant milestone in our renovation journey. Despite encountering some minor rain delays, our work on the elevator shaft is also progressing. We’re eagerly anticipating opening our Livermore clinic, which is projected for completion later this year.…
This month, we celebrated all the strong, resilient, and diverse women in our lives! Axis staff shared with us the female figures who inspired them to pursue a career in healthcare. I always knew that I wanted to help people, but it was my aunt who really inspired me to go into the healthcare field. She worked as a nurse for many years and eventually went back to school to become a nutritionist. She would always keep pushing me to go into healthcare because she saw my passion for helping everyone around me and encouraged me to use that passion…
Community Health Centers play a pivotal role in ensuring accessible, comprehensive, and culturally responsive healthcare for all individuals, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. At Axis Community Health, we understand the importance of creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels safe to seek care without fear of judgment or discrimination. During LGBTQ+ Health Awareness Week, we join the collective effort to shine a light on the health disparities faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. Our goal is to empower healthcare providers and community members to engage in open dialogue, share resources, and foster understanding. From the moment a patient walks through our doors,…
This month, I had the honor of attending the National Association of Community Health Center’s (NACHC) Policy and Issues forum in Washington, D.C. NACHC is the leading healthcare advocacy association that supports the vital work of Community Health Centers across our nation. Throughout the conference, representatives from health centers from every state came together to listen to insights from federal partners and stakeholders, including leaders in community health nationwide. We were privileged to hear from Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, the White House’s Domestic Policy Director, Neera Tanden, and leaders from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)…

Today, Axis Community Health joins our fellow health centers in honoring the heroes who have championed community health. For National Health Center Week’s Stakeholder Appreciation Day, we extend heartfelt gratitude to our local, state and federal policymakers, dedicated donors, and committed board for their ceaseless support. Axis, standing at the forefront of delivering essential healthcare services in the Tri-Valley for the last 51 years, recognizes the immense impact that community health services have on populations challenged by poverty, housing instability, social disparities, and higher health concerns. Axis Community Health, a leading provider of quality, affordable healthcare, is thrilled to announce the groundbreaking of its new clinic site on 2nd Street in Livermore. Axis is relaunching the food distribution for patients, in partnership with Open Heart Kitchen and MCC-East Bay. Prior to the COVID-19 health emergency, for two years we held a monthly food distribution for our patients that provided fresh fruit and vegetables along with shelf-stable nutritious foods. We ceased operations during the pandemic and instead have referred patients to the many emergency community food resources that were operating in our area. To check availability or add yourself to the waitlist, please call Open Heart Kitchen at 925-580-1616, ext. 504. For more details, click HERE.
Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19), you can apply now for coverage if you are uninsured and eligible. You can also apply if you didn’t know about the new state penalty or new financial help available. Medi-Cal enrollment continues to be year-round.
People who experience a qualifying life event can newly enroll in a health plan through Covered California even outside the open enrollment period. People who already have a plan through Covered California who experience a qualifying life event can change their coverage or choose a new plan.
For more information about special enrollment for Covered CA or Medi-Cal, call 925-462-1755 to make a telephone appointment. Learn more on our Enrollment Page.
Axis Community Health is grateful to be a beneficiary of the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund which is raising money for safety-net services that are on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, click HERE.
Due to shelter in place regulations put into place by Alameda County on April 2, our monthly food distribution is postponed until the crisis is over. However, we are working with our community partners to ensure our patients access food elsewhere in our community.

After two years of postponement due to COVID-19, Tri-Valley SOCKS will hold its final “Bras for the Cause” Breast Cancer Walk the evening of Saturday, May 7. Axis Community Health has been selected as one of the walk’s beneficiaries. Funds help support breast health education and services for our patients, including prevention, diagnostics and case management. The event is a Tri-Valley tradition, and features creative costumes, fun break stops, and a great time walking. The theme for this final walk is: “It Takes a Village” united together to work towards ending breast cancer by funding a cure, to support those going through treatment, and to spread awareness through education. In the Livermore Valley, we know it’s often a little something extra that makes a wine special. Darcie Kent Vineyards’ Victories Rosé Malbec has that something extra because each bottle sold raises money to support breast cancer health services at Axis. This special wine, along with other “give back” wines, is available at the winery’s tasting room. To learn more, visit the Darcie Kent Vineyards website.
